Faster Building Inspections Are Now the Standard
If you’ve ever waited around for a building inspection, you’ll know how frustrating — and expensive — delays can be. The good news? Building inspections across New Zealand are getting faster, and new targets are helping keep things on track.
The Government has introduced a mandatory performance target for Building Consent Authorities (BCAs), and early results show it’s already making a real difference.
What’s Changed?
Since August 2025, new regulations have required all BCAs to complete at least 80% of building inspections within three working days of the inspection being requested.
This target was introduced to tackle one of the biggest pain points in construction: waiting for inspections to happen so work can move forward.
The Results So Far
The first nationwide data release shows strong performance across the board:
All 55 Building Consent Authorities that reported inspection wait times met the new target
Around 67,000 inspections were carried out in the last quarter
97.3% of inspections were completed within three working days
Even better, most inspections happened on the same day they were requested
This is a major step forward for both homeowners and builders, helping projects move more smoothly and predictably.
Why This Matters for Your Build
Inspection delays don’t just test patience — they add real costs. Each day a project is held up can add hundreds of dollars in labour, equipment, and scheduling impacts.
Faster inspections mean:
Less downtime on site
Lower holding and labour costs
Shorter overall build timelines
Fewer headaches for homeowners and tradies alike
In short, it makes building more efficient and more affordable.
How Inspection Times Are Being Measured
While most councils are now reporting inspection wait times (from request to inspection), some are still transitioning to a new system.
A small number of authorities currently report inspection availability instead — measuring how soon the next available inspection slot can be booked. Even using this method, results remain strong, with:
Over 96% of inspection slots available within three working days
An average availability of just 1.2 days
All BCAs are expected to move to the Government’s preferred reporting method by July next year.
Building Consents Are Moving Faster Too
Inspection times aren’t the only thing improving.
In the most recent quarter:
95.7% of building consent applications — including amendments and Code Compliance Certificates — were processed within the required 20 working days
This is an improvement on the same period last year
Together, these improvements show a building system that’s becoming more responsive and easier to work with.
What This Means for Homeowners
For anyone planning a build or renovation, this is encouraging news. Faster inspections and more reliable timelines mean fewer delays, clearer scheduling, and a smoother overall experience.
At Wellington Building Company, we work closely with councils and inspectors to keep projects moving efficiently. Improvements like these help ensure our clients spend less time waiting — and more time seeing progress on site.
